“Open your eyes and look within.”- Exodus by Bob Marley and The Wailers
When I first came to Atlanta, I only had two goals– separate myself by being myself and building a community I trust as well as support. As the entertainment industry switches gears into a busy production season, I’m in limbo about where to move next. On one hand, I could move to New York and continue to rise in the world of Advertising (shoutout to the One School). I know more people, housing won’t to be too complicated, and I have work out there.
But then there’s LA.
The pinnacle of film, television, and all things entertainment. Though social media has decentralized the industry, the fact remains– when you want to elevate and learn the business, you head to LA. The last time I was in LA for a week, I stayed in Long Beach and felt at peace. I don’t mind going the distance to get to and from my destination because I thrive in silence. Walking into rush hour and sleeping next to it doesn’t work well for me. I don’t need to be close to the mix— I just the need address. I’ll get there— one way or the highway. I’ve felt convicted to go out west but not exactly into the city of angels. Being the rebel I am, I feel compelled to find the city for me and not solely for work.
While in Atlanta, I jumped through so many hoops ranging from working with artists, capturing Behind the Scenes (because everyone wants their story captured), and even working on a few independent projects.
As my time here winds down, there are a few things I’ve gathered along the way to the A:
Miami/South Florida is all about politics. No matter how much “fun” you see, understand that each municipality got pull in their respective sector (and others but that’s a story for later).
Jacksonville is growing. It always will but it can’t get where it needs to be without young people having some financial backing. There are plenty of innovative creatives in the city but if they are given (or taking) an opportunity to lead, then the city will be filled with parking lots owned by companies outside of the city.
Atlanta… the center of attention. A city drenched in history, horrendous traffic, and a multitude of stars. You’re never surprised if someone grew up with T.I.’s children, found their way onto Tyler Perry’s film lot, or is related to a member of the Dungeon Family (RIP Rico Wade).
Though I haven’t lived in New York or LA, I’ve frequented the cities often enough to know the vibe I want. I still haven’t decided but I’m almost positive that when I do, the transition will be smoother than when I initially arrived to ATL.
PS.
I entered my second short film into a few film festivals and I’m a screener for a film festival so I can understand the process from both sides. I’m excited for the knowledge and perspective I’ll gain once this cycle wraps up.
